Bioactive Polyphenols from Pomegranate Juice Reduce 5-Fluorouracil-Induced Intestinal Mucositis in Intestinal Epithelial Cells

2020

Intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) play a pivotal role in maintaining intestinal homeostasis. Different noxious agents, among them also anticancer therapies, can impair intestinal epithelial integrity triggering inflammation and oxidative stress. A frequent complication of chemotherapy is gastrointestinal mucositis, strongly influencing the effectiveness of therapy, increasing healthcare costs, and impairing patients&rsquo

Planning Punic cities: Geophysical prospection and the built environment at Motya, Sicily

2020

The urban plan of ancient Motya on the Isola di San Pantaleo on the west coast of Sicily and its relationship to developments in Phoenician and Punic societies have been investigated since the early 1960s. Data from geophysical surveys in the north-eastern quadrant of Motya show the regular organisation of urban insulae framed by two broad roads. These results, combined with data from previous nearby excavations, improve the modelling of Motya's layout, and contribute to the wider discussion of Phoenician/Punic and broader Mediterranean urban traditions between the sixth and fourth centuries BC.

2009

The aim of this paper is to provide well-stated petrographic reference groups for the recognition of several Sicilian and Spanish Phoenician-Punic production centres in order to facilitate an instrument of further objective support for amphorae provenance. This instrument is based on the crosschecking between data provided by typological studies and the thinsection analysis of amphorae fabrics. It is worth noting that this is only a first step within the framework of a larger research project focused in the creation of an Atlas of Phoenician and Punic Amphorae in the Western Mediterranean including both archaeological and petrographic data. In this context a systematical work on the known p…

Concordiae Agrigentinorum Sacrum Res Publica Lilybitanorum. Parte II. Lilibeo: …

2021

Some archaeological investigations at Lilybaeum (Marsala) have brought to light a building in the northern part of the Capo Boeo, close to an insula occupied by a large domus. According to an inscription that mentions a deity called myronima and thea megiste, two well know epicleses of Isis, this building has been interpreted as an Iseum. The text is engraved on the surface of a half column, whose function is now re-interpreted. Also some fragmentary sculptures, which were found during the same excavations, have been deemed to belong to an Isis- Aphrodite and a Sarapis. A new reading of these statues suggests a very different interpretation. The male torso and a fragment of a bearded head a…

Carthage's military installations of the First Punic War on Monte Pellegrino (Palermo)

2019

The excavation in the park of Villa Belmonte (Monte Pellegrino, Palermo) has brought to light several warehouses, made with a “pseudo-frame” technique, probably with a straw roof, used for the storage of foodstuffs, given the large quantity of Punic-type amphorae found in situ, datable to around the middle of the third century BC. In addition, a section of road - about 3 m wide that proceeds in the direction of WNW- ESE, consisting of two layers of use - has been intercepted. We believe to have tracked down part of a strategic/military station used by the Carthaginian army during the crucial years of the First Punic War.
